Uzbek President Islam Karimov paid his first official visit to Slovenia during which he met all top Slovenian officials and attended a business conference. Three economic agreements were also signed on the occasion.
After a meeting President Janez Drnovsek, Karimov said Uzbekistan was keen to learn about Slovenia's experiences in its effort to develop democracy and market economy. Both presidents called for closer relations between their countries. Although the nations have not had many ties they hope to develop them also in view of Slovenia's role in the OSCE, the EU and NATO. Drnovsek stressed Uzbekistan's great potential such as natural resources and cheap labour. Karimov, too, said there were "excellent opportunities" for the development of business ties. Ways of boosting business cooperation also topped the agenda of talks with PM Janez Jansa, while OSCE activities dominated Karimov's meeting with FM Dimitrij Rupel.
