Two Visits Aimed at Upgrading Ties with Serbia-Montenegro

Serbia-Montenegro, 14 March

A Slovenian parliamentary delegation, headed by Speaker France Cukjati, paid a three-day official visit to Serbia-Montenegro at the beginning of last week, while Serbia's President Boris Tadic visited Slovenia on Friday at the invitation of Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, who currently chairs the OSCE.

Rupel said Slovenia supported Serbia's EU aspirations, while Tadic underscored the importance placed by Serbia on Slovenia's current stint as OSCE president, as well as its membership of the EU. Tadic said that Serbia's top aims were membership of the EU and NATO's Partnership for Peace programme. These are primarily security goals, however, in the long term they will become crucial for economic stability and development, Tadic said. Business ties were high on the agenda as Tadic met Economics Minister Andrej Vizjak to discuss possibilities for boosting investment. The Serbian official also met PM Janez Jansa and President Janez Drnovsek and spoke to Slovenian lawmakers.
Speaker Cukjati and his delegation visited Serbia-Montenegro to get firsthand information about the conditions in the country ahead of the upcoming regional meeting of speakers of parliaments in Slovenia. In talks with top officials in Belgrade and Podgorica, Cukjati expressed support for both entities' EU aspirations. He said Slovenia's parliament would like to establish closer ties with all legislatures in the countries of the former Yugoslavia, one of the reasons being to seek information, plans and proposals on how to deal with the problems faced by the Balkans.
