Environmental Agencies' Meeting Seeks to Implement Green Policies

Ljubljana, 10 March

A meeting of the heads of European environmental organisations in Ljubljana is aimed at turning environmental policies into concrete action, director of the European Environment Agency Jacqueline McGlade said at the outset of the event. McGlade said this was a strategic meeting of those who are in charge of introducing actual changes in individual countries.

The two-day event, which opened on Thursday, is held twice a year and aims at exchanging experience and information in implementing environmental legislation, Silvo Zlebir, the director of the Slovenian Environment Agency said.
The meeting, organised by the agency, was attended by 47 representatives from 24 countries, including the US environment agency. Zlebir said that such a high-level dialogue was very useful for Slovenia.
McGlade said that the main environmental problems in Europe were air pollution in urban areas and intensive land use, both through farming and dumpsites, outside cities, as well as water pollution.
Zlebir added that Slovenia expects most difficulties with waste and traffic in future. He said Slovenia was working on meeting the goals of the Kyoto Protocol.
