The police dealt with 86,568 criminal offences last year, a rise of 13% over 2003. According to the head of Slovenian police forces, Darko Anzelj, the increase is mainly due to a rise in reported property crime, while there was also an increase in the cases of gravest crime, such as rape and sexual assaults against minors.
The resolution rate for 2004 was at the level of previous years, Anzelj told the press on Wednesday as he presented the report of the Slovenian police for 2004. According to him, the resolution rate was best for the most serious crimes.
Anzelj also drew attention to white collar crime, which last year caused damage of SIT 24bn (EUR 100m). This is a 69 percent increase compared to a year before.
In road safety, the police recorded 508,064 offences carrying fine. They also referred 88,049 cases to magistrates.
Due to an increase in death toll (from 242 in 2003 to 274 in 2004), the deputy police head, Milan Horvat, said police had reached a critical point with repressive measures so other state institutions and NGOs should join the efforts to tackle the matter.
