Composers' Association Celebrates 60th Anniversary
Slovenian Composers' Association (DSS) will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a number of concerts in Slovenia and abroad. It also plans to issue three publications on its work and the music of Alojz Ajdic's opera "Brata" (Brothers). The opera will be staged for the first time ever by the Ljubljana Opera and Ballet House in May.
Jubilee concerts, among them a number of premieres, will be held throughout the year, wrapping up with a ceremonial event on 17 December, shortly before the 22 December anniversary.
Already in February, the DSS launched a series of events abroad with a concert of Slovenian contemporary music in Warsaw, DSS officials told the press on Wednesday as they presented the anniversary programme.
Later this month, the Ljubljana and Zagreb music academies will exchange concerts, while the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra wind trio will make a guest appearance at the Macedonian Music days in April.
The esteemed Dresden ensemble Courage will be performing at the Slovenian Philharmonics Society in June. The DSS Solos Chamber Orchestra is due to perform in Great Britain in October, while a concert exchange with the Netherlands is also planned for autumn. The association will be featured at the Frankfurt music fair between 6 and 9 April.
The anniversary will also be marked by two traditional events: the "DSS Concert Workshop" series and the "Slovenian Composers Night", featuring four concerts.
One of those will be a chamber concert in Celje on 8 April. A concert of new music is to be held in Bled on 2 July, followed by a concert of sacral music on 3 July. "Composers' Night" is to wrap up with children's ballet about "Tinko Polovinko", staged in November as a tribute to composer Janez Bitenc, who died in February.
Several other concerts will be held exclusively for the anniversary. On 15 March, Slovenia's best choruses will perform new choral music selected at a competition. The event will be held at the Philharmonic Society.
Apart from the DSS, the kin associations in Finland and Poland also celebrate their 60th anniversaries this year. Their representatives have been invited to a concert on 26 March.
The DSS secretary general, Mitja Bervar, also announced a documentary on the association, which is to be produced by the public broadcaster Televizija Slovenija.
