Slovenia Due to Enter Schengen Zone in October 2007
Slovenia, along with the other EU newcomers, expects to enter the Schengen zone in October 2007, the head of the Government Office for European Affairs (SVEZ) Marcel Koprol said.
Koprol explained that a timetable for EU evaluation of Slovenia's preparedness to enter the area has already been set, with most of the assessments scheduled for 2006.
According to the timetable, the EU will evaluate cooperation of police forces in February 2006, data protection in March, sea border control in April, land border control in May and air control in June of the same year.
Also sometime in 2006, the EU is due to check Slovenia's visa policy.
Once the country has entered the Schengen area, there will be no more border posts on Slovenia's borders with Italy, Austria and Hungary, while border controls will become stricter on the border with Croatia.
