A series of black-and-white impressionist photographs of China won Jan Raposa the Photo of the Year award, conferred for the 11th time by the magazine Emzin. The award ceremony on Wednesday evening also launched the Emzin Photo of the Year 2003 exhibition at the Ljubljana arts centre Cankarjev dom.
A jury of experts named by the arts magazine awarded Raposa the SIT 300,000 (EUR 1,250) prize for photos the jurors described as "distinguished by strictness and perfectionism".
He avoided stressing the picturesqueness of most shots made in exotic countries and instead used the minimum of means to express the essential components of an environment, its tradition, history and past.
Second placed Bostjan Pucelj won SIT 200,000 (EUR 830) while third placed Pavel Gregoric walked away with SIT 150,000 (EUR 625). Spela Zabkar received the prize for best press photo.
The jury was made up of Emzin editor Metka Daris, art historian and critic Brane Kovic, painter Zmago Jeraj, art historian Zelimir Koscevic and photographer Franci Virant. They reviewed a total of 2,460 photos that professional and amateur photographers sent in.
