Slovenia's Aid for Tsunami Victims Amounts to EUR 2.8M

Brussels, 15 February

Slovenia donated EUR 2.8m in aid for the Asian countries hit by the deadly tsunami in December, which is EUR 1.5 per capita, Foreign Ministry State Secretary Bozo Cerar said in Luxembourg on Tuesday. Cerar said this was the total amount provided by the government and Slovenian humanitarian agencies.

The state secretary spoke on the side of a two-day informal meeting of the EU ministers for development cooperation in Luxembourg. Topping the agenda of the meeting was aid to SE Asia, with the ministers examining the promises given and plans for the future, which mainly revolve around the reconstruction assistance.
Concrete measures will be passed in the coming weeks and months, said Cerar, explaining that Slovenia had already met half of its commitments. The assistance to traumatised children provided by the Foundation Together is one of the projects still underway, he said.
Also discussed by the ministers were preparations for the September UN summit, which will review the achievements in meeting the Millennium Development Goals, aimed at reducing poverty in the world. Cerar said that the member states expressed readiness to increase the funds allocated to assist developing countries and meet the set goals.
Ministers of new member states expressed readiness to gradually start taking part in the development assistance scheme. New member states are only starting to turn from recipients of aid into donor countries.
Slovenia last year allocated 0.1 GNP to development assistance, according to Cerar, who said that the amount would be gradually raised in the coming years.
