EU ministers in charge of education, youth and culture, including Milan Zver, the minister of education and sport, on Monday reviewed the intermediate report on the Lisbon Strategy and debated the efficiency of education in Europe.
In reviewing the part of the Lisbon Strategy that deals with education, it was stressed how crucial the ministries of education are in implementing the strategy, Zver stressed.
Commenting on the ministerial debate about the effectiveness of the educational system and accessibility, Zver said that Slovenia ranks high in accessibility, but is less successful in effectiveness.
According to Zver, accessibility and effectiveness are complementary. "It is fair when a society uses all of its resources, especially human potential...this is also the most effective way for the society in the long term," he said.
Although some countries, including Slovenia, invest heavily in education, quality is just as important as the amount of money. There are big reserves in this area, not only in Slovenia but also elsewhere, he explained, as "much more can be achieved even with a smaller sum".
In the informal part of the meeting, the ministers agreed that member states will form a joint platform in helping educational establishments in Southeast Asia that were devastated by a tsunami in December.
