2nd Festival of Contemporary Dance to Feature 12 Productions

Ljubljana, 10 February

The 2nd festival of Slovenian contemporary dance will feature 12 productions on the main and another four on the fringe programme. "Gibanica" will be underway in Ljubljana between 23 and 27 February. Two awards will be presented to the best productions, one selected by the audience and the other by an international jury.

Rok Vevar, theatre critic and one of the three programme selectors, said he regretted the lack of classical ballet performances. He explained that the festival was not restricted to modern dance. A number of productions avoid classic choreography, but include digital body images and visual artists, Vevar observed.
The main programme will feature "Amplified Body" by Snjezana Premus, "Collect-if" by the dance group Collect-if, "What a Feeling!" by Nina Mesko, "Letters from the Present" by Neven Korda, Igor Sviderski and Ziva Repovz, "Forma Interrogativa" by Magdalena Reiter, "HI-RES" by Male Kline and Maja Delak, "Confi-dance" by Goran Bogdanovski and Dejan Srhoj.
Also on the main programme are "Quick Story" by Sanja Neskovic Persin and Branko Potocan, "Pedestrian Zone" by Branko Potocan, "The State of Things" by Nina Mesko and Tanja Lazetic, "Rebeka" by Andreja Rauch and "Concept of Concept" by Mateja Bucar.
Four more productions will be featured on the accompanying programme, namely "Temporary Autonomous Zone" by The Stroj, Matej Kejzar and Aldo Ivancic, "Catharsis for Beginners" by Jurij Konjar, "We Are All Marlene Dietrich For" by Emil Hrvatin and Erna Omarsdottir and "Mozart - Hype as I Wanna Be" by Iztok Kovac.
The selection of the programme was entrusted to Martina Hochmuth of the Vienna-based contemporary dance and performance institution Tanzquartier; Mateja Revolj, a former member of the Slovenian National Opera and Ballet and dancer in numerous contemporary dance and theatre productions; and Rok Vevar, theatre director and art critic. They chose among 54 productions.
The festival will also feature two workshops. One will be led by Julia Buckroyd of the University of Hertfordshire. Entitled "Vital Elements", the workshop will look into the role of training and education in shaping the future of contemporary dance in Slovenia.
The second workshop, "The State of Things", is expected to be attended by 37 international guests who will take a critical look at the Slovenian dance scene.
The name of the festival is a pun on the Slovenian verb for moving - "gibati" - and the traditional Slovenian pastry "gibanica", which is often mistakenly translated as "moving cake".
Just as the dish "gibanica" varies from region to region, so does Slovenian dance production, the organisers of Gibanica said last year when the new festival was launched.
