Slovenian Company Wins Contract for Bridge in Belgrade

Ljubljana, 10 February

The structural engineering company Ponting and partners DDC of Ljubljana and Centar za puteve from Serbia-Montenegro, have won a contract for the design of a major bridge over the Sava in Belgrade. The centrepiece of the 980-metre construction will be a 200-metre tower which Ponting believes will become a landmark of the city.

Designed by Ponting architects Viktor Markelj and Marjan Pipenbaher, and Peter Gebrijelcic of the Ljubljana Faculty of Architecture, the bridge will have a single round tower and fan cable stays holding the concrete deck that will have three car lanes and two tram and pedestrian lanes in both directions.
The whole project is valued at up to 90 million euros and is part of a 17 km stretch of a planned ring road worth 500 million euros. The bridge designers won 770,000 euros for the design and now have to complete the pre-construction phase of the project within six months.
Construction is set to start early next year or at the beginning of 2007, and should be completed in 2008, according to Branka Jakovljevic of the partner company from the Serbia-Montenegro city of Novi Sad.
The trio of companies was selected among 11 projects that were submitted last year. Interestingly, second place went to another Slovenian design company, Gradis of Maribor.
