Third Rotation of Slovenian Soldiers Leaves for Afghanistan

Ljubljana, 13 February

The third rotation of Slovenian soldiers has left to participate in the international peace-keeping mission in Afghanistan. The 29-strong contingent includes a reconnaissance unit from the 10th motorised battalion, two veterinarians, four firefighters and a commanding officer from the 132nd mountain battalion.

The four firefighters in the latest Slovenian contingent to serve in Afghanistan are already in this central Asian country, while the rest left Slovenia on Sunday. According to the commanding officer Borut Cesar, the contingent has been training both at home and abroad and is ready for the task at hand.
The latest rotation of Slovenian soldiers to serve in Afghanistan is expected to arrive in Kabul on Wednesday. The current rotation of soldiers, meanwhile, is expected back in Slovenia by the end of the month.
Cesar explained that Slovenian soldiers will be involved in a wide variety of tasks, with the primary goal being the provision of security for the normal functioning of the Afghan government.
The reconnaissance unit is to be under Canadian command in Camp Julien in Kabul, while the firefighting unit is to be stationed at the Kabul International Airport. The veterinarians are to be working under the German ISAF command.
