Govt Sets Out to Raise Awareness About EU Constitution
Print this page
Ljubljana, 27 January

The government has decided to embark on a two-year public awareness campaign on the EU constitution. The Government PR and Media Office has been put in charge of issuing special publications, organising public debates and cooperating with NGOs.

The government has thereby addressed concerns that a speedy ratification of the constitutional treaty - due on 1 February - would not leave enough room for public debate about the landmark document.
The two-year period gives Slovenia enough time to provide the public with in-depth information about the citizens' rights and duties, and the significance of the EU constitution for Slovenia.
Ministries and government agencies will also take part in the campaign, as well as the European Commission Representation in Slovenia, the Information Office of the European Parliament and NGOs that have been selected at a public call for projects.
Budget funds of SIT 20m (EUR 83,000) have been allocated for the public awareness campaign in 2005.
