Four Slovenian projects have been approved for funds from the European Union's Cohesion Fund until the end of the current EU budget period, which ends in 2006. The total value of EU funds for these projects is EUR 81m.
According to the Government Office for Local Self-government and Regional Policy, the European Commission officially revealed that four Slovenian projects - two transport and two environmental projects - have been approved for the funds.
The EU will provide the most funds for the construction of a motorway section between Smednik and Krska vas in SE Slovenia. This project is worth 116.7 million euros, of which the Cohesion Fund will provide 42.49 million euros.
The EU will fund 15.24m of a 27.5 million euro project involving the construction of a waste water treatment plant on the Slovenian coast. Around 15 million euros will also be given for the upgrade of the Pragersko-Ormoz rail line in NE Slovenia, a project worth 36.14 million euros.
A project involving the construction of a regional waste management centre in Celje, eastern Slovenia, worth 19.95 million euros, is to get 8.88 million euros from the EU fund.
All four projects can now get underway. Apart from EU funds, the projects will also be funded from the national budget and municipal purses.
The European Cohesion Fund participates in the financing of large environmental and transport projects in EU member states where the GDP per capita is lower than 90 percent of the EU average.
