Rupel Briefs NATO Representatives on OSCE Priorities

Brussels, 26 January

Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, the chairman-in-office of the OSCE, met NATO ambassadors at the North Atlantic Council on Wednesday to outline the priorities of Slovenia's stint at the helm of the OSCE.

"We established that NATO and the OSCE have many common interests and objectives, so cooperation is possible in many areas," Rupel said after the meeting.
The ambassadors welcomed the idea that permanent representatives of both organisations would hold meetings, according to Rupel. This is crucial due to overlapping tasks, and from the vantage point of problems that the OSCE has been having.
Rupel was referring to disputes with Russia, which have proved to be an obstacle to an agreement on the OSCE budget and the appointment of a new secretary-general.
The OSCE chairman also reported about the organisation's activities. He focused on Ukraine, which he says must show its commitment to reform within a year, and Kosovo, which the OSCE will pay special attention to.
In Kosovo, "the OSCE wishes to play an active role in the process of assessing standards and a possible restructuring of international presence in the province," he said.
