Potocnik Confident Slovenia Will Find Place in Strategic Objectives

Brussels, 26 January

Slovenia should have no problem in finding its place in the strategic objectives adopted on Wednesday by the European Commission for its five-year term, Slovenia's Commissioner Janez Potocnik has said.

According to Potocnik, Slovenia should be able to relate to the objectives, since they take into consideration the key concerns of EU citizens.
The priorities are designed to be guidelines for all the EU member states. "A right course for Europe is also a right course for Slovenia," Potocnik said.
Potocnik, who is the science and research commissioner, said the number one objective of the new strategy was achieving prosperity, followed by solidarity and security.
"We are talking about seeking the right path to build a prosperous society that reflects the European quality of life in practice," Potocnik said.
The newly-adopted strategy is expected to be put into context only after the Commission adopts reforms of the Lisbon Strategy, expectedly next week, said Potocnik. The strategy will be put into action after this, the commissioner stressed.
Potocnik believes the guidelines exude trust and optimism. He added that they are not a new Lisbon Strategy but a tool for implementing it.
"This is about making choices between key components and on ways to best implement these components. It is not about casting aside goals, such as environmental protection and social security," Potocnik said.
Potocnik announced he would present the new Commission objectives and reforms of the Lisbon Strategy to Slovenia's parliament next month.
