Busek Asks for Continued Slovenian Interest in SE Europe

Ljubljana, 26 January

The special coordinator of the Stability Pact for SE Europe has made a request for continued Slovenian involvement in SE Europe as he met Prime Minister Janez Jansa on Wednesday in Ljubljana.

Erhard Busek, who arrived in Slovenia for a two-day visit, said Slovenia's involvement in SE Europe is important given that the European Union is experiencing "Balkan fatigue" as it concentrates on making itself a global political force.
Moreover, Busek believes the extensive debate surrounding Turkey's EU accession negotiations has diverted attention from SE Europe and its needs.
Busek said after the meeting that Jansa pledged Slovenia would continue paying attention to SE Europe.
Busek also called on Jansa to ensure that Slovenia continues to strive for the implementation of initiatives of the interior ministers of Slovenia, Austria, the Czech Republic and other new EU members regarding EU border security.
Busek furthermore announced he would raise the issue of OSCE operations in Moldova aimed at fighting organised crime in talks with the head of Slovenia's OSCE task force Boris Frlec on Thursday.
Slovenia is currently presiding over the OSCE, an organisation with close ties to the Stability Pact. The country has pledged to focus on SE Europe as part of its presidency.
