The government's key priorities this year will be to meet the requirements for accession to the euro zone, and to secure a favourable support environment for economic growth and social stability. This is what PM Janez Jansa said after the first plenary meeting of the ruling centre-right coalition on Monday.
According to the PM, the meeting was convened for the government to present a draft agenda for this year to coalition MPs. These put forward some additional proposals to the document, which Jansa said the government would take into consideration in drawing up a final programme for this year.
Jansa said another key priority of the ruling coalition this year would be to supplement education reform in a bid to make Slovenia competitive with other EU members in attaining Lisbon Agenda goals.
Asked by a reporter to comment on the first two months in office, Jansa said the government had done a "fourfold" job. The ministers first assessed the situation in their departments after taking over from their predecessors, whereupon they set to prepare a programme of work, attending to routine business all the while. They also had to form their teams during this time, Jansa explained.
Since the former government changed the bill on public administration, Jansa said, the new government faced a "void" as it assumed office. He explained this by saying that notices inviting candidates to apply for top posts within ministries were only published now. "This fourfold work has been rather hard," Jansa said.
