Smuggling of illegal immigrants, arms trafficking and distribution of counterfeited euros are the most frequent cases of organised crime in Slovenia, suggests an annual report by Europol.
According to the report of the EU law enforcement organisation, human trafficking is the most common form of organised crime in Slovenia, with the criminal cartels largely connected with the Western Balkans.
The report says that a lot of members of Slovenian criminal associations originally come from the areas of the former Yugoslavia, maintaining family, friendly and criminal contacts there.
Slovenian authorities moreover detected smuggling channels for weapons from SE Europe to EU countries and even to other continents, with the nationals of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Slovenia acting as couriers.
Lastly, according to the report published on Wednesday, Slovenia has witnessed a considerable rise in the distribution of counterfeited euros, with this phenomenon expected to increase further.
The Europol annual report for 2004 otherwise suggests that the European criminal organisations have become more and more complex and difficult to crack down. Drug trafficking meanwhile remains the most wide-spread form of organised crime in the EU.
