NGOs and the Govt Establishing a Dialogue

Public Administration Minister Gregor Virant met representatives of NGOs on Friday to discuss the establishment of a dialogue between the government and the NGOs.

Primoz Sporar, a representative of the Initiative for the Future of NGOs, said that a new government negotiating team would be formed in the coming weeks that would be in charge of the dialogue with NGOs. The first meeting between the NGOs and the government is to take place within a month.
Sporar told that Friday's talks showed that the government gave the green light for talks with NGOs. Within a year, an agreement on the cooperation between the NGOs and the government could be signed, Sporar quoted the minister, adding that the prospects were good for now.
Virant, whose ministry is in charge of the dialogue with the NGOs in the new government, said at today's meeting that the formation of a new government negotiating team would help achieve a better civil society dialogue. He said the work of the NGOs was a value added to the quality of the emerging regulations.
The Initiative for the Future of NGOs is an informal group of individuals from various NGOs who joined forces on 16 July 2003 in an attempt to encourage a dialogue with the government.
The Initiative aims to establish an ongoing dialogue and partnership between the NGOs and the government in drafting documents, policies and programmes. The NGOs would also like the government to provide better conditions for their operation.
The NGOs would particularly like to be involved in the drafting of new legislation, particularly the acts that concern their activities. So far a number of laws, including those on societies, institutes, concessions, voluntary work, have been drafted without their cooperation.
