Govt Forms Local Self-Government and Regional Policy Office

Ljubljana, 20 January

The government has united the Regional Development and Structural Policy Office and the Interior Ministry's Directorate for Local Self-Government into the Office for Local Self-Government and Regional Policy. The new body is headed by minister without portfolio Ivan Zagar.

The formation of the new agency expands the field of local self-government to local community funding and financial decentralisation, Zagar told the press after Thursday's government session.
In the field of local self-government, the office will draft legislative proposals, act as coordinator between ministries and other government agencies, and oversee the implementation of the European Charter of Local Self-Government, Zagar explained.
In regional development, it will focus on closing development gaps, direct regional policies, as well as monitor the activities of the Public Agency for Regional Development and the Public Fund for Regional Development and Preservation of Countryside Settlement.
For the field of EU cohesion policy, Zagar said his office would be making preparations for the EU's 2007-2013 budget and draft strategic documents based on which Slovenia can receive structural funds from the EU.
