Charities Busy Receiving Donations for Tsunami Relief

Slovenian charities have been flooded with donations for victims of the 26 December tsunami in SE Asia. While the Slovenian Red Cross has received almost SIT 69m (EUR 290,000) in donations, Slovenska Karitas has collected SIT 125m (EUR 520,000).

Slovenska Karitas, the charity organisation managed by the Slovenian Bishops' Conference, has been transferring funds to Srilanka through through Caritas Internationalis, a confederation of 162 Catholic charities.
In addition, the organisation has been collecting materials such as clothing and tools. The first container with 20 tonnes of mainly tools will be loaded on to a ship headed for Sri Lanka on Wednesday.
The Red Cross has so far transferred SIT 45m (EUR 190,000) through the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Both organisations also receive donations through mobile phone text messages: the Red Cross has so far received SIT 18m (EUR 75,000) this way.
The Slovenian government has also stepped in, allocating a total of SIT 88m (EUR 370,000) for this purpose to date.
