European Commission Grants EUR 620m to Transport Infrastructure
The European Commission has granted EUR 620m for the assessment and construction of trans-European transport network projects (TEN). Two Slovenian projects were granted a total of EUR 6.97m.
The Slovenian projects include the construction of the second railway line on the Koper-Divaca-Ljubljana route, which was granted EUR 5.47m, and modernisation of the Ljubljana-Budapest railway route on the Pragersko-Hodos section, which was granted EUR 1.5m.
"The construction of the trans-European transport network is a major element of European competitiveness and the balanced and sustainable development of the European Union" said Jacques Barrot, the European Commissioner responsible for transport.
More than 65% has been allocated to rail projects and 20% to innovative and intelligent transport systems (ITS), such as those concerning interoperability in the railway or aviation sectors. Among the projects and studies receiving significant support are GALILEO.
A total of EUR 515 million has been granted to projects which had already been identified in the 2001-2006 Multiannual Indicative Programme (MIP), which mainly covers the 30 priority projects approved by the European Parliament and the Council in April 2004.
The 30 priority projects, which includes both Slovenian projects, represent investments of EUR 225bn up to 2020.
Most of the funds will be provided by the member states, while the EU will grant up to 20% of the investment.
