Govt Panel Says Tax Reform Must Be Drafted ASAP

Ljubljana, 7 January

The government economic panel has urged for a simplification of tax legislation. Since the implementation of the tax laws that entered into force on 1 January has been causing certain difficulties, the panel on Friday proposed to the finance minister to set up a taskforce to draft a reform of this legislation as soon as possible.

The government economic panel, an inter-ministerial working group, held their maiden session. They discussed the Finance Ministry-drafted blueprint of an approach to a new tax reform and the problems surrounding the new tax legislation.
The panel said everything possible must be done to simplify tax legislation, within the existing legal framework. Moreover, they believe that the government should change bylaws as soon as it has received the assessment and proposals from the taskforce.
Finance Minister Andrej Bajuk briefed other members of the panel on the proposal to appoint an expert group that is to draft a tax reform after the debate on the issue has concluded in the Strategic Council for Economic Development.
The group is to be appointed by the government at its next session. Economist Marko Kranjec has been put forward as the chair.
The panel today also discussed preparations for the negotiations on the EU's new financial perspective, governing the common expenditure from the beginning of 2007 to the end of 2013.
Chaired by Prime Minister Janez Jansa, the economic panel includes Finance Minister Andrej Bajuk, Environment Minister Janez Podobnik, Economics Minister Andrej Vizjak, Labour Minister Janez Drobnic, Agriculture Minister Marija Lukacic and Regional Development Minister Ivan Zagar.
The panel, whose task is to draw up economic policies and supervise their implementation, also features head of the Government Office for Macroeconomic Analyses and Development (IMAD) Janez Sustersic and economist Mico Mrkaic, the chair of the Strategic Council for Economic Development.
