2004 has been one of the most successful years for Slovenian spa resorts recently. The visitor numbers were up by 6.9 percent to 529,940, with 56.4 percent of the guests coming from abroad.
While the number of foreign visitors was up by 12 percent, spas also recorded a 3.2 percent increase among domestic guests.
Spas generate one third of the turnover in Slovenian tourism. Last year they accounted for 2,491,75 overnights, up 2.8 percent over 2003. Overnights by foreigners were up by 6.8 percent, while their share in overall overnights rose from 38.9 to 40.5 percent.
While visitor numbers increased across all markets, overnights were up among the Italians and Russians (16% each), Croatians (11%), Israelis (183%), the Dutch (47%), the Swiss (30%). An increase of 27% was recorded in overnights by visitors from other European countries.
Meanwhile spas reported a drop in overnights by guests coming from traditional markets, such as Austria (-1%) and Germany (-9%). Their share in overnights was thus down from 59.4 to 53.7 percent, while the share of Italian guests rose from 20.4 to 22.1 percent.
A new market opening up for Slovenian spas is the United Kingdom. The number of visitors from there was up by 50 percent to 1,923, while their share among the overall foreign guests was up from 0.6 to 0.8 percent. The number of Israeli visitors increased almost three-fold.
