Drnovsek: Presidency of OSCE and EU Are Tough Tasks

Brdo pri Kranju, 5 January

Slovenia's chairmanship of the OSCE will be taking place in the most unfavourable international situation, President Janez Drnovsek said in an address to Slovenian diplomats as he outlined some of the main task they will be involved in this year.

Slovenia will have to use all of its potential if it wants to be up to this very demanding task, the president stressed.
Moreover, the country will be able to achieve a good result only with a common effort of all diplomats. In this way it will be able to consolidate its international reputation.
Drnovsek also stressed that the experience the country will gain at the helm of the OSCE will be of great value when it assumes EU presidency in two years' time.
This is another task, he stressed, for which thorough preparations will be needed, Drnovsek told the diplomats he hosted on Wednesday, the last day of a traditional meeting of Slovenian diplomats with state officials.
Touching on the Asian tsunami disaster, Drnovsek said the catastrophe also revealed something positive, namely international solidarity.
He believes solidarity had never been as strong when the UN was trying to help the poorest. Convinced that building international solidarity will remain crucial in the future, Drnovsek said Slovenia's diplomacy too will focus on it in 2005.
