The government has appointed members of the strategic council for economic development, a newly-established advisory body that will discuss strategic issues of Slovenia's development. The council will be headed by economist Mico Mrkaic, an advocate of liberalisation and the state's withdrawal from the economy.
Mrkaic advocates the sale of state-owned banks and insurance companies. However, opinions are bound to differ in the council, as another member, Matjaz Gantar, the chair of the largest mutual fund company KD Group, said yesterday that "state property should not be sold too quickly".
Also sitting on the council will be Marko Kranjc, Ljubo Sirc, Joze P. Damijan, Igor Masten, Saso Polanc, Tomaz Prosen, Anton Jurgetz, Ivo Boscarol and Janez Sustersic.
The economic development council, a group of experts, will give opinions and proposals to the prime minister about macroeconomic policy, entrepreneurship-friendly environment and global competitiveness of the Slovenian economy as well as other economic and development issues of national importance.
The government on Thursday also appointed Franci Rokavec the government's state secretary for structural policy and regional development. Rokavec, 41, served as an MP of the Slovenian People's Party (SLS) in the past two terms but failed to be reelected in the October general election.
Also appointed today were new members of the assembly of the Pension Management Fund (KAD), after the incumbent assembly finished its term on 21 December.
Sitting on the KAD assembly will be the above-mentioned economist Mico Mrkaic, Gregor Gomiscek, Bogomir Spiletic, Matjaz Jansa, Drago Siftar, Dragica Jazbec, Rado Likar, Davorin Krajnc, Ervin Buzan, Marjan Senica, Marko Pogacnik, Mateja Perger, Nada Skuk, Anton Rous and Joze Jeraj.
