The government appointed Marcel Koprol as the head of the Government Office for European Affairs on Tuesday. Koprol, who has so far served as consul general in Cleveland, was already appointed state secretary in the office of prime minister by the government last week.
Born in Zagreb on 26 May 1945, Marcel Koprol is chemical engineer. He has so far served as the Foreign Ministry representative for Jordan, seated in Amman, a Foreign Ministry state undersecretary and deputy head of the Slovenia mission to the EU. He has also worked as the head of the Middle East office of furniture dealer Lesnina.
In the former government, the Office for European Affairs was headed by Europe minister. The office was first held by Janez Potocnik, who was succeeded by Milan M. Cvikl after appointed Slovenia's first European commissioner. The Janez Jansa government does not have a Europe minister.
Before Koprol's arrival, Foreign Ministry State Secretary Bozo Cerar took over at the helm of the Office for European Affairs last Friday. He announced that "over the next few days we'll agree on division of responsibilities in European affairs between State Secretary Koprol and the Foreign Ministry."
