Eurobarometer: Slovenia among Most Favourable to EU Enlargement

Brussels, 10 December

In the EU, further enlargement is mainly backed by the new member states, including Slovenia, while old EU members appear to be significantly less enthusiastic about it, citizens of seven of them being clearly against enlargement, suggest the latest Eurobarometer results published on Friday.

According to the Public Opinion Analysis sector of the European Commission, 68% of EU citizens are favourable to the idea of a European constitution. According to the opinion poll, 17% are against. Most favourable opinions came from Belgium (81%) and Slovenia (80%).

Half of the EU citizens have a positive opinion about life in the EU. Topping the list are the Irish (75%), Slovenia being forth (62%). Interestingly, aside from the UK and Austria (32% and 34% respectively), Croatia is among the countries with the most negative image about the EU, as only 36% of the polled expressed positive opinions.

When it comes to EU institutions, opinions are once again divided: an average 52% of EU citizens trust the European Parliament and 52% trust the European Commission. The shares in Slovenia are above the average, namely 66% trusting the European Parliament and 64% trusting the European Commission.

Slovenians appear to be quite critical about the US; 70% of the polled in fact believe that its role in promoting world peace is negative, and 61% are critical about the US role in combating terrorism, according to the Eurobarometer results.
