Olympics and World Fair in China Chance for Slovenian Companies

Ljubljana, 8 December

Economic cooperation between Slovenia and China was high on the agenda as a National Council delegation visited China last week. Speaking to the press after their return to Ljubljana, councillors said opportunities for Slovenian companies lie in the 2008 Olympics and the Expo 2010, both to be hosted by China.

The Chinese officials agreed that Slovenian companies could service both events, National Council President Janez Susnik said on Wednesday, adding that China is an economic superpower worth cooperating with.
According to Susnik, the discussions at the China's Ministry of Commerce proved to be the most important, since this year's trade between the countries will exceed US$ 400m, with Slovenia's exports representing only 10 percent of the figure.
The key question is therefore how to cut this deficit, said Susnik. The delegation has agreed with the director of the economic office to establishdirect contact between the relevant ministries in both countries.
China has already expressed interest in cooperation in electronics, telecommunications, and pharmaceuticals, while the Slovenian delegation presented the advantages of the manager of the port of Koper as an entrance point for Chinese goods entering Eastern European markets.
Slovenia sent its first economic representative to China in 1999, while Slovenian companies have currently 17 offices in China.
