Slovenia Supports Turkey's EU Accession

Ljubljana, 2 December

Slovene officials assured Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Guel, who paid a two-day visit to Slovenia, that the country supports Turkey's EU bid.

Slovenia is interested in an open and positive EU accession talks with Turkey, outgoing Foreign Minister Ivo Vajgl told the press after talks with Guel. Dimitrij Rupel, the incoming foreign minister, meanwhile announced that Ljubljana would back the beginning of accession talks with Turkey. The Turkish guest was also received by President Janez Drnovsek and Speaker of Parliament France Cukjati. Talking to the press, Guel said he expected "a good decision" at the December EU summit. He said the decision on Turkey's accession talks had actually already been made at the 2002 summit in Copenhagen, where all EU leaders agreed that the talks should start at the end of 2004 without delay provided that the European Commission passes a positive report.
