Exactly two months after the general election, parliament appointed a 15-member cabinet of Prime Minister Janez Jansa by 51 votes against 37 on Friday. The centre-right coalition government of the Slovenian Democrats (SDS), New Slovenia (NSi), People's Party (SLS) and Pensioners' Party (DeSUS) controls 49 seats in the 90-seat parliament.
The ministers have been sworn in before parliament. Prior to being appointed, each of the ministers had to sign a code of ethics. The senior coalition member, SDS, has eight ministers in the government (Andrej Brucan, Marija Lukacic, Dragutin Mate, Dimitrij Rupel, Vasko Simoniti, Gregor Virant, Andrej Vizjak and Milan Zver). There are also four NSi ministers (Andrej Bajuk, Janez Drobnic, Lovro Sturm and Jure Zupan), and two SLS ministers (Janez Podobnik and Janez Bozic). The smallest coalition partner, DeSUS, has one minister (Karl Erjavec).
In today's vote, the Jansa cabinet was backed by the MPs of the four coalition parties plus the legislators of Hungarian and Italian ethnic minorities, Maria Pozsonec and Roberto Battelli, respectively.
The factions of the opposition Liberal Democrats (LDS), United List (ZLSD) and the National Party (SNS) announced already before the vote that they would not support what is the 8th government in independent Slovenia.
The new opposition has promised the new government its constructive cooperation in the projects that are in the national interest, while also indicating its determination to keep a careful eye on the work of all ministers. The left-leaning ZLSD and the LDS have also assured the new government to allow it a 100 days to settle in.
