The film "Bad Education" (La mala education) by the Spanish cult director Pedro Almodovar will lift the curtain on the 15th Ljubljana International Film Festival (LIFFe). Running for two weeks, the festival will feature 114 films.
In addition to the regular and well established sections such as "Perspectives" and "Horizons", the festival will also present documentaries in the "Guerilla Documentaries" section and a new programme called "Extravaganza" presenting young filmmakers.
The section "South - Southeast" has been abandoned: the Ljubljana festival does not wish to be a promoter of regional film, as this is already successfully done by the Sarajevo film festival.
As every year, the Kingfisher Award for best film of the "Perspectives" section and the viewers' award Golden Reel will be handed out. LIFFe will also feature the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Award.
Quality-wise, the "Perspectives" section is the highlight of the festival, showcasing 18 films, including a Slovenian film, "Rusevine" (Ruins), by director and screenwriter Janez Burger.
The largest number of films, 29, will be shown in the "Horizons" section, often tackling topics such as immigration, family crisis, disease. The festival will feature 18 foreign guests from 14 different countries, among them three from the countries of ex-Yugoslavia.
As many as 30,000 tickets for films featured at the 15th Ljubljana International Film Festival (LIFFe) have already been sold out. As the festival got under way only on Wednesday, ticket sales are likely to top last year's record of 43,000.
Around 25 film screenings have already been sold out, among them Pedro Almodovar's "Bad Education", and "Three-step Dance" by Salvatore Mereu, according to Natasa Novak of the festival's press service.
