The Southeastern Europe Defence Ministerial (SEDM) wrapped up its session in Ljubljana on Friday with a conclusion that this cooperation mechanism is a very welcome initiative, yet improvements are necessary in military cooperation. "
The activities of SE Europe multi-national forces are an objective interest of the member states, but especially in the interest of peace, security and stability in the whole region," Slovenia's Defence Minister Anton Grizold said after the meeting. The defence ministers also discussed military capabilities that are taking shape as part of the initiative, namely the Southeastern European Brigade (SEEBRIG). Slovenia is still an observer in the brigade, but Grizold said it would start taking part in the near future. Initially, one or two officers will be assigned to SEEBRIG. The brigade is to become operational in 2005. Ian Brzezinski, US deputy assistant secretary of defence for European and NATO affairs, said it should be used in action ASAP. He suggested that the UN mission in Afghanistan, ISAF, might be a good opportunity for that.
