SDS Announces Changes to Government Cabinet

Ljubljana, 4 November

The new government of Janez Jansa is likely to have the same number of ministries, but several changes are expected in the cabinet. Most notably, one ministry is to be abolished while several other portfolios will be thoroughly reshuffled.

This is a proposal that three of the four parties that look set to form the new coalition, SDS, NSi and SLS, filed in parliament on Friday to create the necessary legal basis before Jansa was elected prime minister-designate.
Gregor Virant, a member of the Slovenian Democrats (SDS), told that the Ministry of Information Society will be eliminated. The tasks related to telecommunications and post will be transferred to the Economics Ministry, while the fields of access to public information and e-government will be in the domain of the new Ministry of Public Administration.
The new portfolio will also take in the Government Centre for Informatics, the Personnel Department and the Joint Services of the Government.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Sport is also in for a thorough overhaul. It is to be split up into a Ministry of Education and Sport and a separate Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology.
Changes will also affect the Ministry of the Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy: the energy department would be transferred to the Economics Ministry. Virant pointed out that energy is an economic activity.
The amendments would also do away with ministerial counsels, yet the proposal says that the government can appoint state secretaries to help coordinate tasks, Virant explained.
