Alojz Uran New Archbishop
The Pope appointed Ljubljana Auxiliary Bishop Alojz Uran the new Ljubljana archbishop and Slovenian metropolitan. Uran will officially succeed his predecessor Franc Rode at an inauguration ceremony due on 5 December at the Ljubljana Cathedral.
The sixth Ljubljana archbishop and Slovenia's fifth metropolitan, Uran will replace Rode, who left for a top office in the Vatican in April. Rode proved to be a controversial figure during his seven years in office as archbishop.
Alojz Uran was born on 22 January 1945 in a village on the outskirts of Ljubljana. He was ordained priest in June 1970, and was conferred the title of bishop by the pope in January 1993.
The appointment of bishops is under jurisdiction of the Holy See, with the procedure being set down in the canon law.
In the case of Uran, it was Apostolic Nuncio in Slovenia Santos Abril y Castello who was in charge of drafting a list of three possible candidates. His own and the bishops' personal opinion on the candidates was then sent to the Holy See. The procedure was then carried on by the Congregation for Bishops, until the archbishop was named by the Pope.
The previous archbishop, Franc Rode informed the public about his appointment to the post of prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life in February, and assumed the new office in the Vatican in April.
