The new Slovenian parliament has been inaugurated whereby the outgoing parliament and government have been dissolved.
France Cukjati of the largest parliamentary party, the SDS, was elected the new speaker of the National Assembly after the parliament was inaugurated at the outset of its maiden session. His candidacy was backed by 58 lawmakers in a secret ballot on Friday, while 28 were against. While support for his candidacy was announced prior to the vote by the SDS, NSi, SLS and DeSUS, the second largest deputy group, the LDS, cast doubt on his suitability for the post. The LDS claimed he was not know as a person open to dialogue, and some of his attitudes were discriminatory to certain groups of citizens. Cukjati promised he would fulfil his duties correctly and honour the rules of parliamentary democracy even when these go in favour of the opposition. He will be aided in his efforts by two deputy speakers elected today, Saso Pece of SNS and Vasja Klavora of DeSUS. The third deputy speaker post is still empty, as Majda Potrata of ZLSD failed to garner the necessary support.
