The government gave its approval to a compromise deal on euro spelling reached Tuesday by the committee of permanent representatives in the EU (COREPER).
At Tuesday's correspondence session the government authorised Slovenia's ambassador to the EU to accept the solution under which the single European currency will be spelt "euro" in all member states in primary and secondary legislation, while grammatical rules of national languages will be used in its declination. The compromise solution was also approved by the parliamentary European affairs committee. Europe Minister Milan M. Cvikl was confident the compromise was a good one. Unlike Slovenia, Hungary and Latvia rejected the compromise, but did not threaten not to sign the EU constitution. Slovenia's Ambassador to the EU Ciril Stokelj told STA that the compromise would stay in place in spite of the opposition of these two countries.
