Slovenia’s Largest Theatre Festival Opened it's Door

Maribor, 15 October

Theatre lovers will be focusing their attention this week on Maribor, where the 39th annual Borstnik Meeting, Slovenia’s largest theatre festival, opened on 15 October.

Every year in the second half of October – this year it will run from October 15-28 – the best shows of the year gather to compete for awards for best show, director, actors, musical score and other artistic categories. The conclusion of the festival will feature the presentation of the Borstnik Ring, the highest Slovene award for achievements in the theatre. Each year it is presented to an actress or actor who has left a major legacy to the Slovene stage. The 2003 Borstnik Ring went to actress Anica Kumer of Celje.

The festival is named for Ignacij Borstnik, the founder of the Slovene artistic theatre. He was the first Slovene theatre director in the modern sense of the word, and a master craftsman of the most demanding roles, especially from turn-of-the-century modernist realism.

For more on the programme and accompanying events during the festival see the website at http://www.borstnikovo.info/.
