City of Women: Focussing on Transition This Year

Ljubljana, 1 October

The City of Women (Mesto žensk), a festival of contemporary arts, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. With its topic "Past Transition – Welcome to the Future?" this year's festival relates the past achievements of Slovenia and its entry to the European Union.

The rich international programme with over forty artists from fifteen countries (Russia, Lebanon, Tunisia, Poland, Canada, Austria, Germany, Belgium, the USA, Bosnia and Herzegovina, India, the United Kingdom, an others.) enables an insight into the extraordinary contribution of women, both in transitional societies and in technologically highly developed environments, as well as into their dreams and visions. One part of the festival is devoted to music, cinema and theatre. The common thread of the programme is a mix of new media with stage performances, visual and audio arts.

The City of Women is comprised of 30 events and runs until the 7th of October at various venues in Ljubljana – ranging from the Cankarjev dom centre, the Kinodvor cinema, the ŠKUC gallery, the Kapelca gallery, Stara elektrarna/Old Power Station, the Metelkova Mesto autonomous cultural centre, the MGL- Ljubljana City Theatre and streets of Ljubljana. The tenth City of Women international festival is organised by the Association for the Promotion of Women in Culture - City of Women and co-produced by Cankarjev dom.
