Conditional Support for Croatia

Foreign Minister Ivo Vajgl said at a press conference that the Slovene Ministry of Foreign Affairs will propose to the Croats that Slovenia and Croatia conclude an agreement for avoiding incidents between the two countries

As a further step towards resolving disputes between the two countries, Slovenia will establish contacts with two respected persons from the countries of the European Union who have offered their services. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not wish to reveal the names of the two persons, as the agreement with Croatia will have to be concluded first.

The agreement which Slovenia will propose to Croatia will be a type of gentlemen’s agreement. In it both countries would undertake to avoid incidents in connection with unresolved issues arising from the fall of the former Yugoslavia and in doing so respect the border situation as of 25 June 1991 and previously adopted solutions. In addition the agreement would include the principle that the police on both sides would cooperate and in a tolerant manner unite their efforts to avoid and prevent incidents.

Permanent Representative of the Republic of Slovenia to the European Union Ciril Štokelj said that Slovene support for Croatia to join in European integration will be conditional. This means that Slovene representatives will use yardsticks which apply to all candidates when voting on Croatia in the Council of the European Union.
