Parliamentary elections were held in Slovenia on Sunday, in which according to unofficial returns a relative majority was gained by the opposition Slovene Democratic Party (SDS).
The Slovene Democratic Party received over 29% of votes, i.e. 29 parliamentary seats. Undoubtedly the big losers in the election were the leading party for many years, Liberal Democracy of Slovenia (LDS), which received under 23 percent of the votes i.e. 23 parliamentary seats. They are followed by the United List of Social Democrats, New Slovenia, the Slovene People’s Party and the Slovene National Party. The parliamentary threshold of 4 percent has for the time being also been crossed by the Democratic Party of Retired People of Slovenia, which for the moment has 4.01 percent of votes. Of course, these results are unofficial; the absentee ballots from abroad are still to be counted.
60.49% of registered voters turned out for the elections. This is the lowest turnout in Slovenia’s four parliamentary elections. In the last elections in the year 2000, the turnout was 70.37%.
Candidates from 23 candidate lists competed for seats in the ninety-seat parliament, of which 17 lists were party lists and three were non-party. Three independent candidates also ran. A total of 1131 candidates ran for office, of which one candidate from the Italian national minority and five from the Hungarian national minority. The members of both of these indigenous national minorities in Slovenia each elect one deputy to the National Assembly (parliament). One quarter (25.4 percent) of the candidates were women.
The official results of the elections will be released on 13 October, at which point more will be known about the composition of the new government coalition.
