Fairer International Community
Slovene President Janez Drnovšek recently delivered a speech on a fairer globalisation process and on the battle against terrorism by means of international law at the 59th session of the UN General Assembly.
President Drnovšek presented his view that boundaries separating problems in the global community are becoming increasingly blurred, which applies to a wide range of areas, from security, social and economic concerns to the environmental sphere. He also emphasised that the battle against terrorism must not take its toll on international standards, human rights and international humanitarian law. “Any lowering of standards will be negatively reflected in diminished legitimacy of international interventions”, said Drnovšek in his speech.
On this occasion, President Drnovšek held bilateral talks with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič, Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. The talks focussed on Slovenia assuming the presidency of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe next year.
