Eurostat reports that last year Slovenia registered a budgetary deficit at 2% of the gross domestic product, which is the lowest budgetary deficit recorded since 2000.
According to Eurostat Slovenia’s budgetary deficit was 2.4% of GDP in 2002, 2.8% in 2001, and 3.5% in 2000. Slovenia recorded public debt at 29.5% in 2003 and 2002, 28.1% in 2001, and 27.4% in 2000, according to Eurostat statistics. In light of its current situation Slovenia is considered one of the least problematic member states of the EU25, since both its deficit and public debt are below the EU average. Last year the average budgetary deficit in the EU25 was 2.8% of GDP and the average public debt was 63.3% GDP. Only 8 member states of the 25 registered a budget surplus.
