Slovenian basketball has been well represented with two victories in the qualification rounds of the European Cup championships, while Slovenia’s footballers drew even with Scotland in the qualifications for the world championship in Glasgow.
Slovenia has taken the first step forward on the parquet floor for a place in the European championship which is to take place in Serbia and Montenegro next year. For the first time in eight previous matches Slovenia defeated the French team in the first round and Poland in the second, putting them well on the road for a place in the European championship.
Nor have Slovenia’s football representatives suffered defeat: following their victory over the Moldavian team they drew even with the Scottish. The rejuvenated squad selected by the legendary Branko Oblak captured the imagination of the Slovenian fans once again. Slovenia’s greatest football success to date was its qualifying for the World Cup in 2002 when Srečko Katanec selected the Slovenian squad.
