The Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, a central national institution for the implementation and coordination of statistical research, celebrates its 60th anniversary of establishment.
The roots of Slovene statistics date back to 1754, when the first population census in the territory of present-day Slovenia was taken. The official Slovene statistics, however, began on 19 August 1944 with the establishment of the Statistical Office of Slovenia. Today the main responsibilities of the Statistical Office include the implementation and coordination of statistical research in the country; it also issues over 380 publications each year. The Slovene statistics employs the concept of Nordic statistics, which is based on registers and is particularly useful.
New challenges to Slovene statistics, which fully applied international standards long before Slovenia gained its status as an independent nation, were served by the country’s transition to a market economy and Slovenia’s full EU membership, which saw Slovenia become part of the European statistical system
