British Tourists on the Rise

Ljubljana, 14 September

In an interview, the director of Slovenia's Tourist Board, Mr Bojan Meden, talks about the summer tourist season and the attributes of Slovenian tourism.

How would you assess the latest tourist season?

So far the tourist season in Slovenia has been successful, particularly if we consider the number of visits and nights spent here by foreign tourists. From January through July, the number of foreign tourists has increased by 7%, while total nights spent have increased by 2%. The prospects for August also look positive.

Do you think the low-cost flights to Ljubljana have had an influence on the number of tourists visiting Slovenia?

This year's tourist season has attracted more visitors particularly from Italy, France, UK and Spain. The biggest increase in visitors has been recorded in Slovenia’s thermal spa centres and wellness resorts, as well as in Ljubljana. There's no doubt the new flight connections with the UK have contributed to the large increase (42%) of British visitors.

What are the main attributes of Slovenia's tourism draw?

Slovenia remains among the most attractive European tourist destinations mainly because of the variety, outstanding offers for active holidays and a good quality-price ratio. The main reasons to visit our country are well-preserved nature, an interesting cultural heritage, excellent cuisine and last but not least, our sense of hospitality and friendly people.
