Foreign Minister Ivo Vajgl Visits Kosovo

FM Ivo Vajgl paid a visit to Kosovo, where Slovenia opened Liaison Office for UNMIK in Priština.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, Ivo Vajgl, paid a visit to Kosovo on 1 September 2004. During the visit the Minister opened the Liaison Office of the Republic of Slovenia for UNMIK in Priština and met the President of Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova, the President of the interim government of Kosovo, Bajram Rexhepi, the special envoy of the UN Secretary General to Kosovo, Soren Jessen-Petersen, and the head of the OSCE mission to Kosovo, Pascal Fiesch, as well as representatives of the Kosovo Serbs. The Minister also visited members of the Slovene police and army taking part in peace missions to Kosovo.

As an EU member state, Slovenia is opening its Liaison Office for UNMIK in Priština for important political and economic reasons; it is also of fundamental national interest for Slovenia. One of the main reasons for opening the Liaison Office for UNMIK in Priština is the fact that the Republic of Slovenia is presiding over the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) next year. The Liaison Office is also important for economy reasons. Many Slovene companies have businesses in Kosovo and many are interested in establishing business activities there, which represents another reason the stability of the region is of great importance to Slovenia.
