Most admirers of Slovenia's natural beauty consider its waterfalls to be the most prized of all its jewels. Many are intermittent or change their semblance during the course of the year. After heavy rains they can become magnificent cascades which transform into insignificant trickles during dry periods, whilst in winter, high up in the mountains, they may transform into stunning frozen sheets and statues of ice.
There are about 260 waterfalls in Slovenia, each of which has its own unique, interesting and ancient history. With the exception of the tufa waterfalls, most falls in Slovenia are past their prime. Slovenia's waterfalls are neither among the most voluminous not the tallest, however, they are as attractive as any and are in splendid harmony with the landscape. Because of their natural and untamed primeval spirit, waterfalls are always popular tourist attractions. Slovenia's most magnificent falls, the Boka Waterfall, can be found near Bovec in the Upper Soča Valley.
The Boka Waterfall
Undoubtedly Boka is the mightiest waterfall in the country. It springs from an abundant alpine karst source under the mountains of the Kanin group. The amount of water is at its greatest during the spring when the snow, lying on the Kanin Plateau above, melts. Soon after its source it descends as a wide fall over a 106- metre high vertical rock face, below which the raging water has carved a deep gorge.
