Renewable energy sources are increasingly important in bringing down levels of green house gas (GHG) emissions. GHG reduction is also a commitment under the Kyoto Protocol, which targets a 5.2 percent reduction in GHG emissions below 1990 levels by 2010. Slovenia is expected to obtain 12 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2012, in line with the White Paper of the EU.
